We understand that you may have questions about our services, our therapists, and how we can meet your expectations for mental health care. That's why we've compiled a list of some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from clients.

What will a client experience in a therapy session?

Most commonly, the session will start with strategic psychotherapy and counselling techniques (interview discussion based), with integration of a soothing hypnosis.

The hypnosis session is recorded for clients to listen to at home in similar conditions of undisturbed relaxation.

Why would hypnosis be beneficial in therapy?

Hypnosis when used for therapeutic outcomes utilises the unconscious power of suggestion with the primary focus of shifting a client’s perspective or unwanted behaviour.

To understand why hypnosis works exceptionally well in therapy, you first need to consider the conscious and unconscious mind behaviour with any particular concern a client may come to see us about.

In understanding the difference between conscious and unconscious processes, we will use Freud’s analogy (The unconscious, 1915) to imagine an iceberg sitting in the ocean. The top part peaking out of the water is our conscious mind experiencing reality through our five senses, sight, touch, taste, sound and smell that we process through an intellectual analytical lens.  Our conscious reality is literally the tip of the iceberg.

Now consider the unconscious mind, the underbelly of the iceberg.  It’s the enormous part of the iceberg you don’t see.  This part of ourselves sits under the surface (and hidden from others) and is responsible for the feelings of pain, thoughts, urges and memories whether they originated from our reality or were imagined.  What’s important to note here, is that the unconscious mind lacks the ability to reason and can process our imagined thoughts and feelings as reality.

What does all this mean? By repeatedly making purposeful suggestions through hypnosis, the unconscious mind accepts them as a true reflection of reality. Hypnosis allows newly learned concepts, skills and solutions to be explored and utilised by the brain for positive benefit.

Hypnosis intervention dates back to the late 18th century to current modern forms of psychotherapeutic methods for effective intervention and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety and other medical conditions.

Why are clients given the session hypnosis recording, support worksheets, and other tasks to complete between sessions?

At Modern PHS, clients are required to participate and dedicate themselves towards their own healing journey as part of therapy success.

In between sessions you will be provided with your hypnosis recording, worksheets, resources and evidence-based exercises to complete. These will help you to put your new skills into practice, strengthen the work we do together, and ensure you are set up for success.

Ultimately we want you to realise just how much control you actually have over your condition symptoms. Completion of assigned tasks is non-negotiable and required as part of recovery success.  I can guarantee that by completing set tasks and attending your booked appointments will secure a successful recovery.

What type of therapy is used in treatment?

Strategic Psychotherapy whilst utilising Clinical Hypnotherapy.  In some cases, this is integrated with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques for certain conditions.

Strategic Psychotherapy focuses on what the client is doing, and how they are doing it, not why. So the cause of the problem is not continually explored/relived in detailed like traditional therapies in the hopes that clients come to their own recovery solutions.

Strategic Psychotherapy identifies a person’s skills gaps causing condition issues, and the client is tasked with developing and practicing new skills in resolving their issues. Strategic Psychotherapy uses a permissive hypnosis style, or a ‘Neo-Eriksonian’ approach which has been proven to be more effective than traditional therapies.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is used for its effective treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). NLP is a therapeutic technique used to re-program unconscious patterns of behaviour and thoughts to positively modify psychological responses.

Clinical Hypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and psychological treatment administered by a trained professional such as a Clinical Hypnotherapist. Hypnotherapy involves preparing the client to a relaxed state of focussed intention where the therapist communicates with the subconscious and makes suggestions to reduce symptoms like pain, anxiety, or addiction.

Hypnosis is considered a “connector” linking the subconscious mind (trance state) to aid in a person’s ability to be receptive to suggestions that can result in positive changed behaviours to a willing participant. This therapeutic method is utilised in addressing physical, emotional, and various psychological disorders.

In summary, by combining elements of strategic psychotherapy, NLP and clinical hypnotherapy, our therapists collaborate with the patient to identify and address false beliefs and altering behavioural patterns, ultimately enabling the patient to quickly progress towards recovery.

Can hypnosis be done online?

Absolutely. Hypnosis is simply a focussed state of awareness that is easily achieved through guided relaxation. All of us go in and out of trance several times a day. Because of this, hypnosis can be guided without a therapist in the room with you.

We know you are fully capable of achieving hypnosis even if you think you cannot be hypnotised.  For example. Have you ever been driving your car or watching a good film and completely lost track of time? Trance is a natural and pleasant state of the human experience where you can remain in complete control. Trance is easily achievable as long as you can hear the guided relaxation without any distractions or disruptions.

Hypnosis in therapy achieves amazing results.  We take your commitment, and investment in improving your life seriously. It’s important that in our sessions, we allocate this special time for you - where you can relax, reflect, and consolidate information in a safe comfortable environment for your personal benefit.

Is online therapy (including hypnotherapy) as affective as face to face?

Absolutely, and the research proves it.  One report concluded that online therapy has led to better outcomes compared to face-to-face therapy. Reasons included that people feel more relaxed in the comfort of their own home or office which is understandable for people experiencing IBS, PTSD, ICD, and OCD based conditions.

Interestingly, a recent study concluded that online therapy led to better progress and was more effective when compared to traditional face to face therapy. You can also check out the review in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (Vol. 14, No. 4) where it was found that e-therapy is equivalent to face-to-face therapy.

What do I need access to for online hypnotherapy?

  • A reliable internet connection
  • Laptop, PC or device with good sound and camera
  • A quiet comfortable place where you won't be disturbed
  • Able to access Google Meet via a link sent to you as part of your booking confirmation.
  • Headset with microphone to allow you to be fully immersed during your soothing hypnosis session
  • Remember to turn off your phone and ensure you are in a comfortable location away from disruptions and distractions.

I am too strong willed; can I be hypnotised?

Contrary to this popular belief, it is a complete myth and here’s why:

Hypnosis is not at all like it has been portrayed in the films, books and performance shows in theatres.  It is not an invisible powerful force where the hypnotist is weakening down a subject’s mind control barrier into total submission. It just doesn’t work that way. In fact, those who believe they are strong minded make better hypnosis subjects as they tend to hold an ability to concentrate and focus attention intently.

The hypnotic trance that a stage performer inflicts on a willing participant is highly dependent on the participant willingness to comply with a hypnotist’s directions.  Afterall, it’s called entertainment for a reason. The participants are carefully handpicked and are selected based on their willingness and confidence to participate, showmanship to perform and don’t mind looking a little ridiculous in front of an audience.

Hypnosis in a therapy setting is a guided form of relaxation that is a very pleasant and comforting experience.  The mind and body together are able to relax and re-set if you like, a bit like shutting down and restarting a computer after the updates have been installed. The client always remains in total control. In fact, during a guided hypnosis you can ignore a hypnotist suggestions, and or get up and leave the room.

The aim of hypnotherapy in this clinic is to help clients – not dominate them!  So, rest assured that you are in safe and very capable hands when you decide to work with us.
